The true masterpieces of Hungarian bus manufacturing will be on display this weekend at the Ikarus Mini Festival, taking place from August 23-25, organized by the Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology, and Transport. The event is accessible on Sunday via the N36 nostalgia tram, running between Keleti Railway Station and Kőbánya Lower Railway Station, and holders of a nostalgia ticket for the ride will receive a discount for the museum’s next temporary exhibition.
This weekend, the Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology, and Transport welcomes those interested in domestic bus manufacturing with special programs. At the Ikarus Mini Festival, visitors will have the opportunity to meet representatives of the iconic Hungarian brand, and there will be a special museum shuttle available. Admission to the event is 125 forints in honor of the 125th anniversary of the Transport Museum. The exhibition will be open from August 23-25 at the Northern Vehicle Repair Depot. The detailed program is available on the museum’s website.

The exhibition is easily accessible by public transportation, and on Sunday, it can even be reached by a true vintage tram running on rails. The N36 tram line, operating between Keleti Railway Station and Kőbánya Lower Railway Station (Kápolna Street), features a bidirectional FVV articulated tram, also known as the „Bengáli.” The Northern Vehicle Repair Depot is most easily and quickly reached from the Eiffel Workshop House stop.
On Sunday, the 1233 tram on the N36 line is one of the bidirectional FVV articulated trams, or „Bengáli,” produced from the 1960s until the late 1970s, with a total of 181 vehicles manufactured over 17 years. These trams operated not only in Budapest but also in Miskolc, Debrecen, and Szeged. The „Bengáli” trams disappeared from the capital’s rails in the early 1980s, but they continued to serve in daily passenger traffic in the countryside even after the turn of the millennium. More interesting facts about the vehicle can be read on the BKK website.
The nostalgia services, including the N36 tram, can be used with a nostalgia line or day ticket, which can be purchased in advance at BKK customer service centers, ticket offices, and are also available from the staff on the nostalgia services. The most popular, full-priced adult nostalgia ticket can even be conveniently purchased from home via the BudapestGO app. Ticket holders are entitled to a 20% discount on the “How Do We Travel? Energy Mix in Transport” temporary exhibition of the Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology, and Transport at the Northern Vehicle Repair Depot, valid until the end of October, upon presenting their travel ticket.
