More comfortable riding over the Danube: the Margit Bridge bicycle path will be renewed

Spread the love

The bicycle path on the northern side of Margaret Bridge will receive a new surface and refreshed road markings this summer.

The renovation of the bicycle path located on the side closer to Margaret Island will be carried out in two phases: from July 8 to August 4, the section between the Island entrance and the Buda bridgehead will be renewed, followed by the section between the Pest bridgehead and the Island entrance. During the works, the outer traffic lane on the bridge towards Buda will be closed to vehicles, allowing only bicycles and pedestrians. The works are expected to last until the end of August.

Cycling on Margaret Bridge will become safer and more comfortable – this summer, the bicycle path on the northern side, closer to Margaret Island, will be renovated. During the reconstruction of the shared area with the sidewalk, the damaged surface will be removed, and a new rough-textured, salt-protective, red-colored coating will be laid on the properly prepared, sandblasted base surface. Additionally, the road markings and bicycle pictograms will be repainted, and the tactile road markings between the bicycle path and the sidewalk will be replaced. During the renovation, cyclists and pedestrians will temporarily use the outer traffic lane of the roadway, which will be designated as a bicycle path, or the sidewalk.

The bicycle path reconstruction will take place in two phases:

  • From Monday, July 8, to approximately August 4, between the Island entrance and the Buda bridgehead;
  • From August 4 to 31, between the Pest bridgehead and the Island entrance.

During the works, the outer lane on the side leading towards Buda will be closed to vehicles to temporarily create a bicycle lane and pedestrian area. During this period, only one traffic lane will be available for vehicles from Pest to Buda on the bridge, potentially causing significant congestion towards Margaret Bridge on Szent István Boulevard and Pozsonyi Road.

To assist public transportation, a temporary bus lane will be designated in the outer traffic lane from the Tátra Street intersection on Szent István Boulevard to the beginning of the work area on Margaret Bridge, which cyclists can also use up to Pozsonyi Road. During the work period, access to Margaret Bridge from Pozsonyi Road will also be limited to one lane.

Bicycle Developments – Even Safer Travel

In recent weeks, as part of the community budget, bicycle lanes have been made safer in several locations across the capital, including districts XI and VI. The developments include improvements that help all road users easily and clearly recognize traffic rules. Thanks to these investments, cycling, driving, and walking will be safer at the affected locations. More details can be found on the BKK website.
